New Season 2021-22

The AGM took place as arranged on Monday night. All went well although we failed to elect a President and the post remains vacant. The meeting agreed the winter season would commence on Tuesday 21st September 2021, hopefully bringing to an end this enforced nightmare.

Please note we strongly recommend all covid safety measures remain in place.Read More

The meeting did agree however that the provision of refreshments would be at the discretion of each club, it was suggested that clubs not providing refreshment should, as a courtesy, notify their opponents before the game.

As you will all recall the winter league consists of three rounds of pairs. and six of singles , the singles using the five card format. Five cards will be dealt, two card then placed in the box. The looser of the initial cut to receive three point, we play once round the board, and the laying of card stops when one player reaches or is as close to 31 as possible.[I have not explained that very well but I know it will all fall into place once we start playing]

Matches must start by 8.30pm result sheets must be returned to the Results Secretary by Wednesday to allow her time to amend her records and to prepare the League Table.

Good luck to all players old or new. [or should that be very old and new]

About Our League

The league was formed by George Constable from Comrades at a meeting with the representatives from six local social clubs on Wednesday 6th July 1983.

Eleven different teams began playing in the first competition two months later on Tuesday 6th September. From these initial teams only the Comrades is still playing. However, a further seven teams have subsequently joined so most importantly now giving us a workable vibrant league.

From 1989 we regularly participated in a competition with the Colchester League until regrettably, they disbanded in 2004.

The History of Cribbage

In the early 1600s, Sir John Suckling an English courtier, poet, gamester and gambler invented cribbage, which he derived from the earlier game of Noddy.

Originally, a five-card game was played where each player discarded only one card to the crib. Nowadays the six-card game is more popular with each player discarding two cards to the crib.

Cribbage is very popular in the United States of America and Canada with many cribbage leagues and clubs in existence; in England, it is the only game that can legally be played in a public house for money.
